Portugal has exorcised the nightmare scenario for its sponsors, media outlets, organizers and fans. At least for the time being, after Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal defeated Hungary 3-0. The result leaves them headed toward a home-and-away playoff against another second-place team in the European qualifying section for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. If the powers that be can draw a sigh of relief that things are finally going Portugal's way, they may have a new and rather more metaphysical obstacle to overcome if the most expensive player in the world is to actually play in South Africa.
A self-described occult practitioner simply known as Pepe announced that he had cast a hex on the Portuguese superstar two weeks ago, according to reports in Spanish newspapers. Pepe, who is based near Malaga, was quoted as saying that a "wealthy client" paid him over $22,000 to cast a malevolent spell on Mr. Ronaldo. Pepe declined to describe the identity of the client, saying simply that she was a "jilted lover," "non-European" and "a very wealthy heiress form a well-known family."
