Chesapeake settles police hiring discrimination lawsuit

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (AP) -- The city of Chesapeake has agreed to place $65,000 into a fund to settle a racial discrimination lawsuit filed by the U.S. Justice Department.

The department sued last summer, claiming that the math test police recruits take unfairly disqualified black and Hispanic officer applicants.

Chesapeake City Attorney Ronald Hallmans says the fund will compensate 42 eligible applicants up to $5,000 each.

The agreement also requires the police department to give priority job offers to up to eight applicants who are qualified for the position but screened out before based on the math test.

A federal judge must approve the settlement.

Virginia Beach resolved a similar Justice Department lawsuit last year. The city created a $160,000 fund to compensate as many as 124 applicants determined to have been discriminated against.
