As I promised in the OP, I'll report more about Hussein. In the OP I mentioned that this White House position of Hussein's has "enabled him to reinterpret the intentions of Islamists, as opposed to Islamic moderates, to American policy makers and to promote their agendas under the guise of Ârepairing relations with the Muslim world."You sure have peaked our interest. can't wait for the follow up reports.
For instance, in a speech on July 20, 2010, Rashad Hussain called the Presidentâs Cairo address â[a framework] that recognizes that we cannot engage one-fourth of the worldâs population based on the beliefs of just a fringe few and that our engagement canât be limited to an issue like violent extremism, but that it must be much broader than that.â This statement is a classic âinfluence operation.â It misrepresents as the âbeliefs of just a fringe fewâ what are, in fact, the teachings and practice of mainstream Islamâs Sharia doctrine. It characterizes as âviolent extremismâ what is actually jihad, and says that we must look beyond the threat it represents. And it implies that the United States must âengageâ with those who are perpetrating jihadism, or at least supporting it, instead of actively combating them.
Rashad Hussain has also lent the prestige of his office to Muslim Brotherhood-organized âinterfaith dialogueâ initiatives. For example, he participated in an August 2010 âbridge-buildingâ trip arranged by Suhail Khan, another figure with Brotherhood ties who has also served in federal government (at the Department of Transportation.) This trip involved, among others, eight prominent American Islamists and the U.S. Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism, Hannah Rosenthal. Hussain has also been among those in the Obama administration encouraging efforts to âbridge the differencesâ between the U.S. Constitutionâs guarantee of freedom of expression and the Organization of Islamic Cooperationâs efforts to prohibit and criminalize worldwide expression that âdefamesâ Islam. Rashad Hussain pursues this âbridge-buildingâ under the auspices of what has been dubbed âthe Istanbul Process.â This diplomatic enterprise was begun in Istanbul in July 2011 and involves the OIC, the United States, and the European Union in an effort to accommodate Islamist demands for restrictions on free speech about Muslim issues such as violence against women, religious persecution of Christians and expressions of genocidal hatred of Israel.
The consequences of this initiative could be seen in a 2011 meeting in Washington of the âIstanbul Process.â Secretary of State Hillary Clinton affirmed a problematic UN convention that declares, âAny advocacy of hatred that âconstitutes incitement to discrimination, hostility or violence shall be prohibited by law.ââ While the use of âincitementâ in that formulation was believed by U.S. participants to be a successful way of finessing the OICâs effort to ban outright expression of ideas it deems offensive to Islam, the secretary general of the OIC, Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, declared that this agreement is not the âend of the road.â One question not addressed was whether, as we continue to navigate that still open âroadâ in the future â that portends for our fundamental constitutional rights â it is advisable to have an American representative to the OIC who has so much in common with his Islamist interlocutors and therefore may believe, as they do, that free and open discussions of the true nature of radical Islam must be prohibited and even criminalized?
