"Tom Cotton: Send In the Troops
The nation must restore order. The military stands ready.

By Tom Cotton

This week, rioters have plunged many American cities into anarchy, recalling the widespread violence of the 1960s.
New York City suffered the worst of the riots Monday night, as Mayor Bill de Blasio stood by while Midtown Manhattan descended into lawlessness. Bands of looters roved the streets, smashing and emptying hundreds of businesses. Some even drove exotic cars; the riots were carnivals for the thrill-seeking rich as well as other criminal elements.

Outnumbered police officers, encumbered by feckless politicians, bore the brunt of the violence. In New York State, rioters ran over officers with cars on at least three occasions. In Las Vegas, an officer is in ā€œgraveā€ condition after being shot in the head by a rioter. In St. Louis, four police officers were shot as they attempted to disperse a mob throwing bricks and dumping gasoline; in a separate incident, a 77-year-old retired police captain was shot to death as he tried to stop looters from ransacking a pawnshop. This is ā€œsomebodyā€™s granddaddy,ā€ a bystander screamed at the scene."
For the most part I like Powers.

If this is a good book, I'll get it.

Don't agree with her, but the tag line sure is the truth

She's a Democrat, a Liberal, works for CNN.....but this is from her book:

." Dissent from liberal orthodoxy is cast as racism, misogyny, bigotry, phobia, and, as we have seen, even violence. If you criticize the lack of due process for male college students accused of rape, you are a rape apologist.

People who are anti-abortion rights don't care about the unborn; they are misogynist who want to control women.

Those who oppose same-sex marriage don't have rational, traditional views about marriage that deserve respect or debate; they are bigots and homophobes.

When conservatives opposed the Affordable Care Act's 'contraceptive mandate' it wasn't due to a differing philosophy about the role of government...they were waging a "War on Women."
She is all in on the crazy now though and has been apologizing for that book.

Seems that change was due to a new employer....CNN.

A girl's gotta eat.

But the book is well written and deserves a read.
I haven't actually read it and used to kind of like Ms. Powers until she lost her shit over 2016. I understand "having to eat", but is a job at CNN really worth the loss of her credibility. It's not like she wouldn't be able to find a job. Maybe she doesn't get as good a job, but at least her principles, integrity, and credibility would still be intact.

You know the old saying, 'follow the money.'

I don't know if that was what changed her claims, but you will find an eloquent and very different view in the book. She was working at Fox at the time.

Notice how the following fits exactly with the attempts by the NYTimes 'journalists' upset with publishing Cotton's essay:

The strategy of the Left is to never confront the Right on doctrine, or ideas: history and experience show them to be losers.
Instead, "... [t]he illiberal left knows that delegitimization works, It is their strongest weapon ....If you can't suppress views you don't like with repressive laws, then delegitimize the people expressing them."
Kirsten Powers, "The Silencing: How The Left Is Killing Free Speech,"

They don't confront that with which they disagree.......they erase it! Or, they don't allow it to be voiced at all!
In the face of the first amendment, "Congress shall make no law ... abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press..."
...they have simply re-defined some new form of speech that that they can abridge....one they call "hate speech."

"Even advocates of 'hate speech' laws, such as New York University law professor Jeremy Waldron have admitted it's unlikely that such legislation 'will ever pass constitutional muster in America.'
[If only.]

[Of course] whether it will hold true in the future depends on what conception of the First Amendment liberal jurists -...influenced by the illiberal left's contempt for free speech- bring to the bench."
Powers, Op. Cit.

"Shortly after the columnā€™s publication on Wednesday evening, a number of Times staffers began tweeting a screenshot of the pieceā€™s headline captioned with the same phrase: ā€œRunning this puts Black @NYTimes staff in danger.ā€ Dozens of Times staff members sent out variants over the course of the evening, with black staffers taking the lead; many non-Times journalists tweeted the same message in solidarity."
The Vox article is pretty interesting. The author speaks to how this isn't just an objection to Senator Cotton's piece, but also, and maybe more importantly, an internal fight going on at the Times. The latest opinion editor James Bennet has been trying to get the Times readership to think more outside their bubble. He has been publishing more pieces from conservatives causing staff to revolt. It kind of reminds me of Kevin Williamson's working for The Atlantic for 3 days before something similar happened.

And, from said article, one finds that the Liberals will not allow it.

"After James Bennet was hired to lead the Times opinion section, he made it clear that part of his mission would be challenging the Timesā€™s mostly liberal readership with views they donā€™t agree with. This is a point heā€™s been explicit on throughout his tenure.

ā€œWe owe our readers an honest struggle over the right paths ahead, not a pretense that weā€™re in possession of Godā€™s own map,ā€ he wrote in a 2018 memo. ā€œThat means being willing to challenge our own assumptions; it means being open to counter-arguments even as we advance our own convictions; it means listening to voices that we may object to and even sometimes find obnoxious, provided they meet the same tests of intellectual honesty, respect for others and openness.ā€

In practice, however, Bennetā€™s approach to this goal has frustrated not only Times readers but some Times reporters and editors, ..."

This is Liberalism writ large. Freedom, Liberty, difference of opinion must be mercilessly stamped out!!!!

It has been so since the French Revolution.

Not surprisingly, public opinion is on the side of law enforcement and law and order, not insurrectionists. How so?

Traumatized and ignored ?

Why does Powers think Trump was elected.

A huge number of people felt ingnored.

You don't see them rioting.

"The 'Maoists' at 'New York' Magazine Strike Again
The blog of the U.S. edition of The Spectator has a disturbing piece on why columnist Andrew Sullivan isnā€™t writing about the demonstrations and riots roiling the nation.

But heā€™s not allowed to write about the riots.

Just as the New York Times was experiencing its own Inner Mongolia Moment over the now notorious Sen. Tom Cotton ā€˜Send in the Troopsā€™ op-ed, the Maoists at New York magazine were going after their best columnist, Andrew Sullivan.
Sullivan revealed on Twitter yesterday that his column wouldnā€™t be appearing. The reason? His editors are not allowing him to write about the riots.
Presumably Sullivanā€™s editors are frightened that he might make the radically bourgeois point that looting and violence are wrong.
Indeed, Sullivan may be a classic liberal, but he shares a love of Western civilization with his late friend Christopher Hitchens. Thinking of the mincemeat Hitch would have made of the rioters and their enablers makes me miss him all over again."

No room for any opposing views at the NYTimes.

The New York Times has just announced that James Bennet, the Editorial Page Editor who allowed Tom Cottonā€™s ā€œSend in the Troopsā€ op-ed that triggered leftists everywhere, including over 800 staffers at the Times who signed a protest letter, is resigning:

NYTimes Communications

The @nytimes announced today that James Bennet, Editorial Page Editor since May 2016, is resigning effective immediately. Katie Kingsbury, who joined The Times in 2017, has been named as acting Editorial Page Editor through the November election. https://bit.ly/3hdy9JE

...Cottonā€™s op-ed triggered staffers so much that they were holding a town-hall on Friday with Dean Baquet, the executive editor and Mr. Bennet, the editorial page editor, to allow them to vent their frustrations. Well that musta been some town-hall.

Either way you look at this itā€™s crazy. After all, Tom Cotton is a sitting U.S. Senator and there was nothing controversial about his column. He simply called on the US to ā€œsend in the troopsā€ to stop the rioting, looting, and restore order. This is an opinion shared by many Americans, especially those whoā€™ve seen their businesses burned down and trashed by looters and rioters.

As Cotton pointed out the same NY Times editor, Bennet, allowed the Taliban to post an op-ed voicing their demands this year and nobody cared. But because he allowed Cottonā€™s op-ed, heā€™s forced to resign? Wow."

Which new name will the Times select.....Prava or Izvestia??????
