Oklahoma banned students could sue the college and win big

If there wasn't a code or rule being violated, then the college just censored free speech and on top of it slandered these students reputation by publicizing this situation in the way that they did, and potentially did financial harm to them.

It's a "public" university. Free speech could have been violated a right granted to every citizen no matter what they say under article 1 of the constitution.
You DO know that free speech only applies when it is the government trying to suppress it, right?

It applies to "anybody" trying to suppress it.

I love it when you get desperate. It means you know you are screwed.

You do know that th University of Oklahoma is a public school and therefore a government agent?

There is precedent, by the way....in 1992, George Mason University suspended Sigma Chi fraternity and placed them on probation over a completely sexist and partly racist “ugly woman contest." The fraternity sued on First Ammendment grounds and the appeals court ruled "The University certainly has a substantial interest in maintaining an educational environment free of discrimination and racism. … On the other hand, a public university has many constitutionally permissible means to protect female and minority students. … The First Amendment forbids the government from ‘restrict[ing] expression because of its message [or] its ideas.”

That SAE chapter is clearly full of racist assholes. But we the contstitution provides protection for all.

Quoting the Constitution is desperation?

LOL! Isn't it wonderful that the one's crying over this, are all the same tooth gnashers who demanded that people be ruined for refusing to bake a cake?

They were in violation of the law.

I don't think anyone is crying over this. The University has a code of conduct these students violated. They're done. I'm sure they can get into another school.
They acted stupid, but what law were they in violation of?

Keep on posting this guys. If there free speech can be silenced and if they can be publicly demonized by the university for exercising their free speech rights any one of us can. As Americans we cannot allow this to be allowed. No matter what we think of their comments.

Exactly.

They didn't stomp on anybody's rights, so they broke no laws. They are innocent. What reason did the university have to expel them?

Nope. Guess again.

That's debatable. A code of conduct can restrict or require actions, but it cannot punish free speech based on content (unless the school is private)

Looks like it is working

The real reason was that the little ***** are no longer safe on campus

So you advocate harm for exercising free speech? That makes you the ****

Of course not

But history has shown that "free speech" often results in an ass kicking

I told all of you all this thread will reveal the dumb posters here at USMB who disagree with me on this. Keep on posting you morons.

For instance, Williams recently indulged in 'free' speech and consequences were severe.

Williams was supposed to be a trusted newsperson.
He was making up stories to make himself look good. A LIAR as it were.
The network couldn't keep him in a position where he was supposed to be "A trusted newsperson".
The network got rid of Williams because he was a liability to them.

The idea that when you're a student you have the right to say anything you want, any time, under any circumstances,

and be protected from any consequences is so absurd that it's hard to believe anyone could even think that.

And you don't think having a white racist fraternity existing happily at a major university is not a liability for the university?
