I suppose it's a waste of my time to try and present factual information to USMB Trumpsters, but I will because at least everyone else cares about objective reality to some degree.

China stopped manipulating its currency in 2014. Trump - like the moron he is - declared during the campaign that he would label China as a currency manipulator when he came to office even though like any political issue, he was wrong.

NOW he is presenting this outrageous lie that China stopped manipulating its currency the DAY he came to office.

I have to wonder if his supporters are really stupid enough to beiieve such bullshit. For the record, I am not stupid enough to assume Obama had anything to do with the end of the currency manipulation by China in 2014.

Trump just made his most appalling claim about China yet

From the article:

Making such a declaration would been no more difficult to do than fire off one more executive order, and quite frankly, one that declared the PRC a currency manipulator would have been no more difficult to issue than than the glorified press releases he popped out like projectile vomit on his "not-really the first day" in office.

Why no more effectual? Under legislation passed in 1988, the secretary of the Treasury is required to "analyze on an annual basis the exchange rate policies of foreign countries … and consider whether countries manipulate the rate of exchange between their currency and the United States dollar for purposes of preventing effective balance of payments adjustments or gaining unfair competitive advantage in international trade."

If the Treasury finds that manipulation is taking place, the law requires them to "take action to initiate negotiations … for the purpose of ensuring that such countries regularly and promptly adjust the rate of exchange." As a number of experts have since 2012 noted, the United States and China already are in negotiations over China’s exchange rate, so it’s not clear what the label would actually change.

Of course, Trump never bothered to look into that prior to making his inane remarks about doing so. Neither, of course, did his willfully ignorant and "reading-challenged" supporters. Consequently, it worked for Trump to repeatedly utter that "tits on a bull" dumbass promise.

Not only has he not labeled China a currency manipulator, he has suddenly developed a kinship with Chinese President Xi Jinping. This budding relationship happens to coincide with lucrative trademark approvals for the Trump brand in China, both for the president himself and his daughter Ivanka.

Trump's "budding relationship" with Mr. Xi. may have something to do with the trademark approvals; however, Mr. Xi was and is well aware that Trump labeling the PRC a currency manipulator would have changed nothing. Accordingly, it's all but certain that Trump's not doing so had no bearing on the approvals. What did? Well, that remains to be seen....

This is not intended as a defense of Trump. It's just keeping in line with the OP's belief in adhering to objective realities.......to a degree.

China plays down devaluation fears as yuan cut for third straight day
China’s central bank sought on Thursday to allay fears it would engineer a continued fall in the yuan in a move that brought calm to global markets rocked this week by a shock series of devaluations.

The People’s Bank of China said the yuan was close to market levels following three successive declines that stoked fears of a currency war should the US and Japan respond by pushing down their exchange rates.

It was widely believed among economists that this practice ended in 2014.

Did you see that interview with John Dickerson yesterday, when he said that? Dickerson does interrupt a lot, but it was funny hearing Dickerson sputtering but but but but but while Trump went on and on with his bullshit.

The real question that needs to be answered is; does Trump actually believe his own bullshit or does he just throw this stuff out there because he knows that vast swaths of the electorate will believe whatever comes out his mouth/twitter feed without bothering to fact check it?

Economists are kind of like journalists. Pretty unreliable due to their dependence on the system they report on.

TN, China has for the past few years moved to prop up it's currency and stabilize its value not devalue it, is it "manipulation"? technically yes but it's manipulation that is beneficial to importers and harmful to Chinese exports, in other words it's been doing exactly what Trump says he wants and Trump didn't have anything to do with that practice.

As far as it becoming a "global problem" in 2017, IMHO it's no more risky than what Central Bankers have been doing to their currencies since the end of Breton-Woods, the real problem for China (and the rest of the world) is that structurally the Chinese economy is a mess of malinvestment and graft, which are the natural results of economic central planning .
