"During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. Men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart." -- United States Code, Title 36, Chapter 10, Sec. 171
Obama's reasoning behind not placing his hand over his heart for the U.S. flag and anthem....As Ive said about the flag pin, I dont want to be perceived as taking sides, Obama said. There are a lot of people in the world to whom the American flag is a symbol of oppression. And the anthem itself conveys a war-like message. You know, the bombs bursting in air and all. It should be swapped for something less parochial and less bellicose. I like the song Id Like to Teach the World to Sing. If that were our anthem, then I might salute it.
Doesn't this defeat the purpose of us being a nation?? Let's change our anthem and flag because other nations may not like it?? He fails to see that many nations before us have viewed the U.S. flag as a sign of strength and freedom. (I.E. the countries liberated in World War II.)
I understand that Obama has since decided to do so, but why the change? And why would he go back on his statement about not wanting to solute it? I just don't trust this guy. Just my opinion....
