Whose to say that those "pro-democracy" rebels were really "pro-democracy"? What type of "democracy" were they advocating?
The reporting at the time indicated they were pro western could we be 100 percent sure about that no but they seem a better option than Assad or ISIS.
What was Assad doing to us?
Directly nothing indirectly he has been and still is a sponsor of terrorism through out the region supporting groups like Hamas and Hezbollah who's actions can impact not just us but the rest of the world. The reality is unless we go in total isolationist mode or achieve the pipe dream of energy independence what happens in the middle east will always have a impact on us so the question becomes if a situation arises where you can help topple someone like this in favor of a possibly more moderate democratic leaning government do you want to take it? There is no guarantee what you will get will be any better but there rarely are any in life.
