NYC cops and firemen are both overpaid. In fact, all government unions are overpaid and over protected. So go ahead and break up all of our no competition government unions. I'm OK with that. There probably aren't many taxpayers who aren't for more accountability. But defunding the police is right up there with the biggest idiotic ideas of all times. Liberals are unfit to rule.

The city's answer to all policing problems is cut the budget or increase the budget. Those who are victims of police violence see the answer is punishing the guilty. Organizations such as BLM see the answer in more global terms, abolish the police. The fact is no one has come up with practical solutions. I certainly don't have one but here're some revealing facts about police and law enforcement in general.

1. According an ex- Police Chief in Washington DC., 95% of calls to police are not connected with criminal acts. They are about traffic accidents, traffic obstructions, missing people, disagreements with neighbors, desertion by spouses, lost pets, strange noises, suicide attempts, etc....
2. 50% of those arrested suffer from serious mental problems.
3. A Police Chief in Seattle said, most of the people we arrest should not be imprisoned but they should not put back on the streets. There is no good alternative now.
4. African Americans found guilty are incarcerated at more than 5 times the rate of whites.
5. The certainty of prison is a deterrent but length of the sentence is not.
6. The main purpose of prison is keep a person from committing crimes while in prison yet the average time spent in prison is less than 5 yrs.
7. Prisons do not reform criminals. 45% of released prisoners will return in less than a year and 70% will return at some point in their life.
8. While there can be serve consequences of lying to the police, policemen say they routinizing lie to civilians, falsify reports, and lie to superiors.
9. Police officer brought to trial for the same crime as a civilian is 3 times more likely to be released.
10. 92% of police officers believe all the changes needed to achieve racial equality have been made compared to 45% of the public.

Since the now have an extra billion dollars to spend, they won't need any assistance from the federal government for COVID relief.
