I guess I can see why a Democrat might be horrified by the idea of a party running a candidate who does not march in strict lock-step with that party's platform. However, this sort of brutal, mindless demand for conformity is really more of a Democrat value than a Republican value. Although the Republican platform is reflective of Republican values, I would also have to say that it is consistent with Republican values that a candidate place his own individual beliefs and conscience above an arbitrary party platform.
