Nuclear is as safe as the money spent on the storage of the spent rods. Trying to save money using pools rather than dry cask storage has created a dangeous situation here and in Japan. That is the drawback of nuclear, it is expensive. Far more expensive than wind, geothermal, and the latest generation of PV. But a very dependable baseload source.
