The earth doesn't maintain a perfect orbit either. If it gets closer to the sun, it gets hotter. If it gets further away, it gets colder. Nothing we can do about it and we didn't cause it to happen either way.

Yes, you are both right, and if you read articles about climate change, these issues are always taken into consideration.
Solar activity definitely plays a part in climate change, but can not explain many of the changes that have taken place in the past century. Did you know, for instance, that in the last 35 years of global warming, sun and climate have been going in opposite directions?
