New student-loan forgiveness under Trump is coming.

What will be interesting is, if Trump forgives student loans, the left nuts will not approve and line up against and criticize Trump.
They oppose anything Trump without thinking at all. Trump could literally say "Don't vote for any republicans in the midterms!" and the left will all vote GOP to spite him.

Accuse Trump, the ultimate capitalist, of being a socialist? You gotta be desperate or kidding. It sounds like a decent plan that has to be ironed out unlike a blanket gift by autopen from a mentally impaired president..

They trigger easily.

Sounds like both sides can agree on student loan forgiveness now.

It is bad for America and the American taxpayer, I agree it is a terrible idea.
If you keep clicking through the links on the Business Insider article, you will see the loan forgiveness program is one from 2007 under Bush - which forgives loans if you work in a public service job for ten years. IMHO this is a good program.

If you make a promise to pay a loan, then you should keep your promise and not rely hard working American taxpayers to pay it for you.

Well, at the time they took the loans, the gvt was promising them that they would forgive the loan if they went into public service.

That law is still in effect, you get a federal Direct Loan, work in certain public sectors and work and pay for it for 120 months, the loan will be paid off, if a person has that type of loan, then it was agreed at the time of the loan, and the borrower fulfills his obligation, then it should be paid because that is the agreement. It does not apply and should not apply for most loans.

I doubt it actually ever happens or maybe .005 get help but it will be interesting to see MAGA come up with more excuses for their past positions.

That's literally my sole reason for posting this. (and to show another instance of Trump supporting socialism. Or what ever ism this is.)

Well, that program is the one they are talking about in this article. Although they don't tell you, you have to click back through at least two of their links to get the rel story.

Another similarity between Trump and Biden. Trump has always been left leaning. He's always supported socialism. And now, in less than a year, Trumps support for socialism is shining through, just as it did last time.

He's wasn't really a lesser of two evils. He just pretended to be.

New student-loan forgiveness under Trump is coming. Here's what borrowers should know.

  • The Trump administration said it is processing student-loan forgiveness for some borrowers on income-based repayment.
  • Eligible borrowers received emails stating that they are expected to receive relief in the coming months.
  • The ongoing government shutdown could cause delays.
Some student-loan borrowers are finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel after years of payments.

Earlier this month, President Donald Trump's administration began sending emails to some borrowers on income-based repayment plans notifying them that they're eligible to have their loans discharged.

IBR plans give borrowers monthly payments based on their incomes, with the promise of forgiveness of any remaining debt after 20 or 25 years. While the Department of Education did not specify how many borrowers are eligible for this round of forgiveness, 2 million borrowers were enrolled in IBR plans in the second quarter of 2025, according to Federal Student Aid data.
Income based repayment plans with discharges at the end have been the law since the 90's. This is not new. Congress enacted that plan by statute which is the only reason Trump is following it. The CARES Act made those discharges tax free as long as they happen before the end of this year, so Trump has been sitting on his hands until now to screw a lot of people out of the tax free discharges instead of processing them in a timely fashion. The end result will be that many people whose discharges should have come down this year will not be getting it until next year and instead of owing no taxes they will have to pay taxes on the discharge amount as if it were income they received. That is the "tax bomb" that Warren and others have been talking about all year.

The article is not about PSLF which has been ongoing that Biden was discharging like mad himself while lying to other borrowers about what was happening. This is about IBR borrowers which are just now being able to get discharges after either 20 or 25 years of repayment depending on whether they have grad school loans.

The forgiveness is only for those who have made payments for a total of 20 years.

So they didn’t sign a contract to repay the loan?

If that stays true, they'd be better off making the monthly income-based payments. Unless they had no other income to report that year, I suppose.

Which is very possible with a degree in gender studies, for example . . .

It was a good system for the Democrats while it lasted. Charge American taxpayers huge amounts for kids to attend your leftist indoctrination centers, take over the loan program, then forgive the debt. Result? The obese blue-haired girls are fully indoctrinated, but have no marketable skills to go with their women's studies degree, then go on the government dole with their partners. 0bamacare pays for their depression/schizo/bipolar meds to boot. Collapse the system from within. Win-win for the Marxist left.

But we got us a new sheriff in town.
