New "Clean Start" Policy on Creating Threads

But the mods now get pissed when you have multiple threads on the same topic but when you have a thread about Russian collusion titled "This is bullshit" you can't blame someone for not being able to find that thread anywhere. The title was poor and didn't give a hint what the OP was about.

Or threads closed because they talk about birtherism. Apparently staff has decided some political issues and dissent on those issues is simply not allowed.

Levant, it was closed for this reason. It did NOT start out as a thread about the legitimacy of birtherism. We have a ton of threads on that already. The topic, SPECIFICALLY, was whether it was racist to believe Obama was born in Kenya. The thread derailed into whether or not Obama was born in Kenya (birtherism) and not about the racist aspect that the OP stated. And despite attempts to get back on track, it continued down that path. Now, at ANY point, you could PM one of us and ask, in fact, that's in the rules. Or did you not know?

How are you going to notify the people who haven't happened upon this thread. Somebody knowing the old rules won't check them, and won't know they've changed, and could get caught in your web.

They have no intention of making any of this happen.....give it a couple days and it's back to the same old dull crap with mods changing headlines or deleting whole threads instead of pulling a "Coyote" and sending what they disagree with to Badlands.
____

I have to agree with this, in part.

Too many lawyer weasel words....like "substantial and relevant".

Sounds like you are going to let Coyote go Jackboot on us again.

Coyote has never ever thought anything I posted was "substantial and relevant".

Now she can do something about it.

Bugger off McCauley. Most of your recent stuff has been substantial enough to pass muster. Are telling me you want new rules to exactly stipulate it...like:

Must be at least 6 sentences, containing no less than 46 words, of which 12 must be nouns, and no more than one grandiose adjective.

Believe me. We have no desire to count crap.

We always HAVE been a Discussion board. We've always focused almost solely on getting thread topics to be discussed and not on arbitrary content issues.. STILL completely committed to the Free Speech thing.. But lately, the thread titles and Opening Posts have been giving Free Speech a bad name..

The basic rules are not gonna change much.. There's already a clause for not allowing "baiting and polarizing" Titles and OPs. That will be footnoted with something like the following..

Titles and Opening Posts
1) Title must contain sufficient clues about the ACTUAL expected discussion. Titles like "How stupid are These People" can't be SEARCHED or indexed for search for the use of members or mods to find and manage existing active threads.

2) Titles must be free of INFLAMMATORY words, name calling or "pet names".. Those things are what make a title "baiting".

3) The "user content" in OPs that the existing rules require needs to be "stepped up".. "Get a load of this" -- is no longer sufficient topical content"... Must be 2 lines or more.. The more the better.. Must SUMMARIZE the topic to be discussed and why you think it NEEDS discussion..

To sum that up.. We're REQUIRING the Original Posters to START a clean topical discussion.,. No more juiced incendiary titles and ranting OPs.. If it's important enough for you to dash to a keyboard to poke it in -- need to put in the effort to start the discussion with YOUR views of the topic..

Post Content
Currently the Rules require "specific topical content" in EVERY post.. And the moderation method for that is stone simple..

Post has "specific topical content" --- stop reading, ignore the rest, it's legal.
Post LACKS "specific topical content" -- It's illegal.. Delete and/or warn...

1) That rule will edited to read "must contain substantial and relevant topical content".. This means that unsubstantiated generalizations about groups or political opponents is NOT ALONE sufficient as "specific topical content" anymore.. Yeah, you have to stop and think and spend a few calories composing a post..

2) Repetition, badgering, harassment, and repeatedly ignoring requests to clarify or answer questions MAY get you booted or warned... This may be specified in the official rules in the coming days.

3) Meme pics are OK - if they are about topic and NOT just personal and fit the definition of substantial and relevant.

4) Posts on the 1st two opening pages of a thread will be CHECKED by moderation when they visit.. These will be HIGHLY moderated, because the course of thread is determined largely in the 1st pages... If you're caught dropping into a brand new topic just to attack or flame -- you'll be warned and banned for one day.. Assuming there isn't more damage to the thread later on.. If you don't care to DISCUSS the topic first -- DONT DROP IN.. This is probably the most common issue we have with "tone", anger, and stinkyness of this place lately. It's a personality pile-on on Pg1.. Not happening anymore.. Keep a distance from members you consider "retards or morons".. Just ignore what you consider to be crap.. Don't prance thru it barefoot..

Transparency on Warnings.

In addition, to add to visibility of who and what is being warned, Moderation will be leaving visible WARNED posts and adding a flag like -- Mod Note: This is a WARNED post.. Do not reply to it.

Obviously it's a bit of public shaming, but more IMPORTANTLY it gives members feedback about the MASSIVE amount of work that moderation does here everyday.. It's also important to see EXAMPLES what what content and material is actionable and we HOPE folks will see daily what rules are enforced and how..

Note that we cannot do this for EVERY post that went into the warning.. If the member was warned for 3 or 10 posts -- the others will simply be deleted.. So you still wont know the EXTENT of ALL the work that was done on that thread, but it's a start on moderation transparency..

When we say "do not reply" we mean it.. If you have questions -- PM a mod or two..

---------------------------------------------------------

How about we stop there and make these adjustments and hope that improves the tone and anger issues? We realize that the problems this nation face right now don't ORIGINATE on USMB.. We just want to prove that Discussion boards are still relevant to IMPROVING the discussion in the land.. Understand that a fair number of members are here for the brawl.. That's why we created the Taunting Forums.. They are not gulags for punishment.. They are there for folks that WANT to brawl and not be constrained to topics.. We won't be moving as much stuff "downstairs".. A fair portion of failed threads will likely get closed instead.. But if you want ranty/flamey titles/OP/Posts -- we'll open more downstairs forums for that..

Be honest, did USMD get BLM'd.....did they threaten to 'cancel' USMB?
OR....did USMD simply drink the BLM Kool-Aid?

flacaltenn are you at liberty to disclose whether or not USMB was BLM’d in any way?

I asked much earlier in the thread and my question was ignored...The timing of the commie-ish changes wreaks of PC motivation. For that I’m inclined to believe that BLM has prompted USMB change and effectively rewritten the rules here.

Many of us are thinking that.

I do appreciate your being honest regarding your attitude.

There really needs to be more contact between moderators and posters.

I realize moderating is a thankless job and you get attacked by both sides of the spectrum.

i do think that if there were more communication on the various issues it would help to promote a better atmosphere on here.

I agree.

Here is an idea. Try pm’ing a mod when have a problem. You’d be amazed at how often a simple discussion can resolve matters or misunderstandings.

I have had problems in the past getting a message to a moderator.

it would be better if a list were put up with their names and how to contact them.

Thanks for everything, mods.

They do have a tough job and deserve recognition.

however everyone makes mistakes.

For the sake of fairness to the mods and the posters we need a better system for resolving problems and especially for resolving matters regarding punitive actions that seem unfair.

We are all reachable by pm...I suppose we could a list as a pinned thread?

Generally speaking...if you have an issue with moderation, ask the mod that made the call. If you don’t who it is, ask ANY mod. We ALL see everything. If you get no satisfaction, go up the chain to tbe SR mods, flacaltenn and ayecantseeyou.

Sometimes newsworthy topics speak for themselves don't they ?
Are we supposed to pretend we're all journalists here ?

OH gawd no.. We dont want you to lower yourself THAT far... LOL...

There's solid reasons behind requiring OPoster content in the OPost.. One is that moderation can't watch 20 minute vids to figure out what topic they're supposed to enforce.. Another is that the OP is really responsible for success or failure of their thread if they dont SELL the topic as real discussion..

And the BIG ONE IS -- what percentage of posters at USMB ya think diligently read EVERY link?? I'll let you estimate that one... LOL...

I read the news and post it. I make a smart ass comment and sometimes it's just really cool stuff that exists.

I'm not worried about word counts. I'm worried that a blind partisan like yourself gets to decide such subjective criteria as: sufficient topical content, substantial, relevant.

Your nickname back a couple of years ago was JackBoot. Don't go back to that---you'll risk losing me...and I know you don't want that.

I don’t give a fuck what anyone thinks.
You also routinely use your prejudice to make mod rulings, in several threads you specifically baited me and when I responded you banned me and no action was taken against you for your actions.
She ( and the other Mods) allowed posters to modify my username to imply I participate in incest. When questioned Coyote claimed she couldn’t decider “ intent”. They will play dumb whenever it suits them.

Whenever you need one like RIGHT NOW -- Go to the Homepage -- check the right hand column. Somewhere 1/2 way down the page is a list of mods signed on.. There's an old inaccurate list under the Members tab somewhere..

But the active mod staff currently is ayecantseeyou kat willhaftawaite meister dont taz me bro coyote and myself.. Get sticky -- put that up on your camera to keep the hackers from seeing you...
