A very, very, very long time ago, Xenu, the ruler over a federation of several dozen planets, had a problem with overpopulation. So, he had large portions of his excess population, drugged, and transported in spaceships that look exactly like DC-8 airplanes, but without propellers, to a desolate planet, where he stacked their paralyzed bodies up on the sides of volcanoes, and set off nuclear weapons in the volcanoes.

Not satisfied with that, he set up some sort of “electronic flypaper” to catch the ghosts of all these people that he had just murdered, and forced them to watch a 36-hour movie, which filled them with all sorts of false beliefs.

He abandoned this planet, then, populated only by these confused, misinformation-filled ghosts.

That planet was Earth, and as other forms of life evolved, and one form gained dominance and sentience, these ghosts started clinging to them, and now poison us with the false beliefs that Xenu planted in them all those trillions of year ago. And according to this story, the burden of all these ghosts clinging to us, and the misinformation that they are feeding into our minds, is holding us back from our true potential, and is the cause of nearly all human suffering.

OK, so that's a really, really stupid story, but at least it's not a bad as the one in the OP.
