There is no need to have freedom of speech for inoffensive speech. Hate Speech, speech that people particularly hate, is the only kind that needs protecting.

The first Amendment is sort of like the 2nd. The Army doesn't need an Amendment to protect its right to bear arms. Just the people. So assuming that the 1st Amendment only protects inoffensive speech is as absurd as assuming the 2nd only protects the rights of the militia to keep/bear arms.
