The reality is that NATO or its main member states haven't engaged in a war with an equal rival. NATO's main doctrine is based on total military domination on the battlefield. It worked quite well where this domination was achieved - the Gulf War, Kosovo; the Afghan and Iraq wars (if only a military campaign is viewed).

In wars where the other side was directly supported by another big player, a draw was achieved (Korea) at best, or humiliating defeat (Vietnam) instead. As a defeat can be viewed a proxy war in Syria also.
