In the beginning, I was certain Trump had no intention of actually being President and was just trying to sabotage the GOP Establishment, and that he would then deliberately self-destruct his campaign. He has achieved the former spectacularly.

As for the latter, Trump is probably as surprised at his success as much as the rest of us are. He may be just starting to take himself seriously and deciding to go for the gold. I don't know.
