No, the OT scriptures were not the "Bible" and that is a mischaracterization of the Tanakh. What first century Christian Jews then did was to harmonize the Tanakh and the prophecies with the life of Christ. Those that believed, became Christian, those that didn't, remained orthodox Jews. Most first century Christians were Jews or Gentiles, many of whom were illiterate who's only understanding of Jesus came from Oral traditions and testimonies of the first Apostles.And yet Jesus often quoted from the OT writings. The disciples were told to study the scriptures, which were the 'bible' of the time.

Keep in mind, that the letters we do have, and the oral traditions written down in the Gospels are important. But Christians today must be very careful that they understand that there is a clear division between the Tanakh and the NT writings, specifically concerning the nature of God as seen in the OT and NT.
