My wife and went to a really plush hotel in Cancun, MX.

We arrived Sunday.

Monday after breakfast we were going down steps in the hotel to the beach. The steps were uneven and my wife slipped, fell, and broke her ankle in 3 places.

We were rushed to the hospital, and last night my wife was in surgery (including recovery) from 7 pm to 1 am.

She is still in the hospital and should be released tomorrow.

As of this morning our hospital bill is over $5000. I am negotiating with the hotel trying to get them to pay at least part of it.

Some vacation.

My poor wife in agony, all the money gone, and we couldn't enjoy any part of it.

Thank G-D, most importantly, the surgery went well, and my wife is doing good.

Thanks for letting me vent.

Have some sympathy rep. Sorry for your woes. When she recovers from her injury, take her someplace nice for a better vacation.

that really sucks! My parents went there on their honeymoon, I guess my mom spent quite a bit of time in the bathroom. Don't drink the water!
I hope your wife gets well soon, broken ankels are not fun especially that bad.

Thanks guys.

The Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach. It's one of 3 hotels here that have a five diamond rating. It truely is a paradise.

We even got the master suite.

I gotta say the level of service we have had in Mexico in the hotel and the hospital far far FAR surpasses anything in the US.

The employees can't do enough to serve you and take care of you.

Even in the hospital the service has been great. When my wife pushed the button she got a nurse in less than a minute each and every time.

I really feel sorry for my poor wife. It was extremely worried. She was in agony when it first happened.

I knew it was was really bad, based on how the foot was twisted.

I really appreciate the sympathy guys. Tomorrow I take her from the hospital.

There is a communication issue, but they try in the hospital and in the end we do communicate.

When I am wife my wife the focus is always on her during this "incident", but this has been extremely stressful for me, especially the waiting the five hours for the surgery and recovery.

I also had to upgrade to first class so my wife has more room on the plane.

What an expensive nightmare.

Thanks again for letting me vent and listening to me.

i am so sorry...this sucks....i am glad she is gonna be fine...a broken ankle takes a while to recover from...one thing tourist should be aware of ...the medical facilities are not top notch...a friend of mine had a heart attack in cancun and had to be flown out on a private jet....luckily his son has just gotten a new credit card with a good size limit....accidents in foreign countries can be hell....

just be glad it was only her ankle...and next time...stay closer to home...i like to vacation in my country lol...for some reason...okay maybe canada...

Always Always Always buy trip insurance if you can. We were in Fairbanks Alaska when 9-11 hit. forced us to lay low for another 7 days til they started flying again,, trip insurance paid for the hotel and all the meals..

I hope your wife makes a smooth and swift recovery. Vacations are long anticipated and it always sucks when disaster strikes..

Was just about to suggest the trip insurance route. Thank you for mentioning it.

Trip insurance covers hospital bills, upgrades to 1st class to return home, medical ambulance flights, and a whole host of other services---including repatriating the body of a loved one who should happen to die (God forbid) abroad (which can be *very, very* expensive and aggravating if you are not covered by trip insurance).

ALWAYS buy trip insurance when you take a big vacation overseas. It's money well spent even if you never need it.

I got my wife back today. The hospital cost was over $8,000.

I was trying to get the hotel to pay at least half of it. I didn't succeed, but I did negotiate the following.

Five nights in the governor's suite, that's over $800/night, for free, including free food and drinks from the time we arrived until the time we leave.

We decided to just extend our trip. We were going to go back tomorrow. But what vacation did we have? It was a nightmare.

Now we can start tomorrow. We decided that the best place for her to recover is this tropical paradise. They are treating us like a King & Queen, and catering to us.

This is a phenomenal hotel as it is. Out of over 4,000 hotels, this is one of 59 that has a five diamond rating.

The hotel personeel will help me as far as moving my wife around.

My wife needs to get used to using crutches, and I will start a separate thread on that.

My wife is doing much better.

Two nights ago she was shaking almost all night. She had a fever that is common with these operations. There is a hotel doctor that came. In the morning, he broughts anti-anixiety meds. They work wonders.

The shaking was mainly due to the anxiety. The med was great. I need a case to take home

The hotel/resort is phenomenal. It was rated one of seven best in the world. The restaurants are also rated five diamonds. One of 59 rated five five diamonds out of 4,000 plus hotels

Out of the 600 plus rooms, there are 3 governor's suites. We are in one of them. It's amazing. 2 big living rooms, as well as a great terrace with a fantastic view.

Also the hotel staff is all over us when we need anything. They all feel bad, and where told by management to cater to us. They cater to you, no matter what. This is even better.

At least if she is recovering, this is a great place to do it.

I saw the x rays with the six screws in the foot. It's really creepy.

I am glad I added into the negotiation food and drinks. That alone would probably be over $200-$250/day.

The service in the hospital was phenomenal. What we also encountered in Mexico, that we never encountered in the US, is how people say it's my pleasure to serve you after thanking them.

Anyone hear that in the states? I never did.

I appreciate all the support.

It was an extremely scary experience.

I still have visions of the look of anguish on my wife's face when it first happened, and her foot was all twisted. Also, it is hard to get my wife up an down stairs, however, we are doing better regarding getting in and out of the bathrooms. The crutches thing will be a challenge.

We came back to the US last night. Today, we went to see an ankle and foot specialist.

Tomorrow, Thanksgiving, the podiatrist is redoing the surgery, to fix what the mexican doctor fucked up. She will be in the hospital overnight for pain management.

We had no choice at the time. Our only other choice was to spend about $50,000 for a special aircraft to medvac her to the US.

My poor wife...

Well let's try to think of the good things...

At least you weren't in Yemen. A friend of mine had a birth go very badly in Yemen and nearly died, and wasn't able to have more children. They had to adopt. Then she went nuts and divorced, leaving her husband with all the kids.

I'll bet they give her good drugs there. Be sure to get lots of prescriptions before you leave.
