Forgive me if this is a dumb question, but when a person takes up more than one seat when on a plane, do they end up having to pay more for their air fare?

Not necessarily, though they should.

^^^ In a way I agree. If someone ends up out of luck because the last available seat is taken due to a person who is oversized, that oversized person should have to pay for the extra seat since there is no way that the money can come from the other person. Tickets may be handed out on a first come first serve bases, true, but most people of course are not going to take up more than one seat.
