The Constitution.

U.S. Constitution — Article IV, Section 4

“The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion; and … against domestic Violence.”

NYC and its constituent boroughs are arms of the State. Thus, where a new Mayor in NYC is a “democratic socialist,” and the crazy leftist City Council might as well be seen as a rubber stamp for that Mayor, unless the crazy stupid NYS Governor steps in, NYS will be in violation of the U.S. Constitution.

Wait and see.

Note: we aren’t talking about political parties. We are talking about the FORM of government.

So the real question is “by what right can anyone object to Staten Island seceding?”

I acknowledge that it might be a little premature. It will take time to see if the State complies with its obligation to the People under the U.S. Constitution.
