Since when are serious criminal charges a "private" matter?

If Mr. Pelosi was allowed to drive his Porsche home, what is the matter with the cops endangering the public by allowing a senior citizen loaded to the gills behind the wheel of a powerful sports car?

Why wasn't the car impounded and searched for possible other violations? Were the cops hiding a series of felonies here? The Pelosi clan has been implicated in other very serious incidents after all.
