More Deaths from Covid = More Deaths Overall

I'm surprised that you didn't have the numbers for suicides, I'll bet that they are up in 2020, and directly linked to the Covid19 Pandemic and our response to the Pandemic
I would not be surprised at all if suicides are way up, and also domestic violence. Long-term effects from school closings, missing regular doctor’s appointments, delayed elective surgery, and of course huge economic losses are undoubted. Nevertheless the stock market is up (!) and so will be long-term unemployment and wealth differentials. Don’t know anybody who really doubts this.

There is a conspiracy story being told by rightwing news sources that Covid death statistics are being inflated by including other natural deaths. That Covid itself is no worse than the flu. We are continually hearing, “What happened to ordinary pneumonia cases? Why are they (or other morbidity statistics) down?” I’m no expert, but official CDC statistics, still not complete, appear to show such claims are nonsense:

Updated Dec. 9, 2020:

Deaths in every state of the country are higher than they would be in a normal year, according to an analysis of estimates from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

The data show how the coronavirus pandemic, which is peaking in many states, is bringing with it unusual patterns of death, higher than the official totals of deaths that have been directly linked to the virus.

Deaths nationwide were 19 percent higher than normal from March 15 to Nov. 21. Altogether, the analysis shows that 356,000 more people than normal have died in the United States during that period, a number that may be an undercount ...

True Pandemic Toll in the U.S. Reaches 356,000

The year 2020 has been abnormal for mortalities. At least 356,000 more people in the United States have died than usual since the coronavirus pandemic took hold in the country in the spring. But not all of these deaths have been directly linked to Covid-19....

Deaths attributed to other causes above normal

Diabetes 15% above normal
Alzheimer’s disease and dementia 12%
High blood pressure 11%
Pneumonia and flu 11%
Coronary heart disease 6%

Note: Data are from March 15 to Nov. 14. Not all causes are included. Deaths from external causes, such as suicides and drug overdoses, are not available because investigations are still underway in most cases.

Some of these additional deaths may actually have been due to Covid-19, but they could have been undiagnosed or misattributed to other causes.

Many of them are most likely indirectly related to the virus and caused by disruptions from the pandemic, including strains on health care systems ... or people avoiding hospitals for fear of exposure to the coronavirus.

40,000 extra deaths from diabetes, Alzheimer’s, high blood pressure and pneumonia...

In several states, deaths attributed to diabetes are at least 20 percent above normal this year....

Prolonged economic stress on families during the pandemic could also be contributing to increased deaths among those with chronic illnesses....

Many of the higher than normal deaths from pneumonia are most likely Covid-19 deaths that were not identified as such, especially earlier in the pandemic when coronavirus tests were scarce. Chest X-rays from the virus and pneumonia also look especially similar, experts said.

New York City, an early epicenter of the pandemic, has seen pneumonia deaths reach about 50 percent above normal, more than double the percentage in the states with the highest rates.

Deaths above normal from pneumonia and flu — United States
March 15 – Nov. 14
DEATHS ABOVE NORMAL: 3,000
PERCENT ABOVE NORMAL 11%

2020 Was Especially Deadly. Covid Wasn’t the Only Culprit.

I can only repeat that personal attacks and silly cartoons aimed at me are a pathetic and childish response to mortality reports collected by the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics ... almost four years after the Trump Administration took over this very Federal agency.

It's not 'our' response to the pandemic, but Trump's. Actually it's Trump's lack of response. He's spent way more time goofing off on twitter and playing golf then he ever did on the virus. He hasn't met with Fauci for months and one of Trump's old team members said he'd like to see Fauci's head as well as the FBI's director's heads on a pike. This is Trump. A low life with many of his 'associates' in jail, out on bond, pardoned by Trump. This Trump. He doesn't care at all about anybody or anything but himself.

Here is another somewhat earlier article from a PHD statistician / professor at Virginia Tech providing a simple view of the issue:

Those who reject NYT and CDC science and statistical articles should provide their own statistical evidence. I am no fan of NYT editorial views on many subjects, and of course I’m aware political opinions often seep into straight news articles. But nobody has shown where this is the case here, and indeed the articles in question point out that deaths related to secondary results of Covid “lockdown” or stay-at-home type issues are serious. These was not articles that mentioned Trump or took any position whatever on what measures were appropriate to deal with Covid.

It is the height of childishness to reject statistical records or scientific fact because one doesn’t like the politics of the source or of the scientists or statisticians involved. Here the issue at one level is very simple. In 2020 since March/April was there an increase in overall deaths corresponding to or even superseding the number of Covid-19 deaths claimed? The answer is ... yes, there was and there is.
Another mouthpiece source approved from the government, the problem with the lies of this shill there is a very well known nurse who wrote a book how she was in one of the major hospitals in my where she witnessed doctors telling her and the other nurses to list all these deaths from people dying from other causes as covid, she did not go along with the cover up and was fired, she has had nurses from all over the country contact her that won’t go along with the coverup, many have lost their licenses, she talks about a conference where they are all meeting at in Jan.

give itup with you lies paid shill, you havebeen exposed.lol

You are embarrassing yourself blaming it all on trump when us true Americans know it was your fascist dem leaders like cuomo as that nurse I mentioned talks about in her book, exposing him and the other dem leaders of the country as the murderers of everyone around the country all committing treason, give it up with your babble trump is to blame when that nurse has exposed your lies that the dem leaders are the treasonous murderers of the American people especially mass murderer monster cuomo

fauci like gates and cuomo is a fucking murderer and all three are satanic evil monsters so kudos for trump staying away from that demonic monster.

Your own linked article indicates these shooting deaths were NOT listed as CAUSED by Covid-19, and Covid-19 was not listed as a condition contributing to death. Death statistics due to criminal activity is as a rule tabulated separately from total deaths caused by diseases, which the National Center for Health Statistics records and specializes in. My thread highlights the statistical connection between ostensible Covid caused deaths and total mortality rates, which the CDC also monitors and graphs. Suicide, crime and accidents are included in general mortality graphs. If you read carefully my links and the links within links you will see this more clearly.

Your silly video of a funeral director in a mountain community complaining about misleading reports possibly hurting local tourism, of local deaths supposedly reported as “related to” Covid deaths, which were not listed as Covid-caused deaths but merely reported as being “among cases” of Covid ... is not in any way a refutation to the point my thread makes.

Thank you for your advice. I get out and walk four or five miles a day, generally without wearing a mask, avoiding strangers and accompanied by my wife. Since I am 71 and retired, suffer serious chronic cough and asthma, I certainly avoid crowds and wear a mask when I must shop or meet people.

I have said absolutely nothing in this thread about “mandates” or lockdowns. There is absolutely nothing you can do, or not do, at this point that will make me “feel better.” This is a difficult period of rapid Covid spread, particularly dangerous to people like me. I look forward to the day when my fellow citizens are less crazy and less divided, when safe vaccines are available to all.

You're right.

Wuhan is dangerous to you. With your underlying conditions, any respiratory infection would be serious. Wuhan, Flu, or a common cold.

The issue that those of us who follow the science have is the absurd level of hyperbole. I had Wuhan back in February. It's miserable, I had a 104 fever and felt like utter shit for a couple of days. I had a bout with strep in my 30's that was worse, but Wuhan is nasty.

Obviously I, like 99.8% of people who get Wuhan recovered. But I have no secondary respiratory issues.

The point being that our reaction to Wuhan is completely out of sync with the actual disease. This isn't the bubonic plague, it passes like the common cold and is about the same a most flus in the impact on people.

Time to follow the science for real.

I have often used the very same analogy — “This is not the bubonic plague” — to try to tamp down the hysteria and fears about “the China virus” being spread by the right, and the often narrowly partisan “blame everything on Trump” views of liberals. This OP is narrowly focused on those who would outright deny that the death toll of Covid-19 is real and significant, and in fact increasing. Of course we have learned that Covid-19 is mostly fatal only to the very old and those with other conditions. Now that vaccines are on the way we can hope Covid fatalities will decrease dramatically in the U.S. by summer 2021 — assuming they are widely taken. Total extra deaths associated with the pandemic may well reach 1/2 million by that time.
