There is one hell of a difference playing HS Football to going to war. If you get a breathing problem, there is Oxygen tanks to help you clear it up. In Combat, if you are receiving Oxygen from a Tank you are being transported to a Hospital because you are injured and a Purple Heat at the least is in your future. You don't take time out under fire. The only timeout is by being dead.

As for Bone Spurs, it should have been necessary that Rump be examined like I was by the Induction Centers Doctors. Bend over and crack...... If I have enough money, I can find a Doctor that will make any claim I want. "I tried to prove I was gay by kissing the Induction Military Doctor and he slipped me the tongue" comes to mind.

I made it through Basic Training with full blown leg Splints. I still marched, ran the mile every day and did the silly games to get us all in shape. Yes, I was in severe pain but I made it through. Seems I didn't have the right soles on my boots for Pavement and Cement and that was all we were on. What I got was a medical to have different soles on my boots. I went on for the next 20 years as many things. My TI was a converted Marine DI. When it came for eval time, he said I was almost good enough to be a Marine. I stood at attention and the calves were burning the hell out of me. So don't tell me that Mr. Bone Spurs couldn't have made it through Boot or Basic. But if I had a breathing disorder, I doubt they would have let me finish and just sent me home. Even the AF Basic builds bodies and Souls.

Hell, I tried to get a nice cushy station like Japan or Germany. But they didn't cooperate. I had a skill with a Rifle and ended up going to two special schools on small and medium weapons. I may have been classified as an Aircraft Specialist but I did my time on the firing line. Have you ever been involved in an Overrun? You drop your tools, report to the Armory, get 6 M-16s issued to you along with hundreds of rounds and head for the Bunker and wait. No use in saying the rest. The Marines and Soldiers understand what comes next. My ears were still ringing days later.

Yes, I could have easily pushed for a Washout due to medical but didn't. Sometime during Tech School, the pain ceased. And I still have to wear soft soles to be on hard surfaces even today.
