Molnupiravir: First pill to treat Covid gets approval in UK

Great news!

This is where pharma makes the BIG MONEY....$600 a pill, vs.$19.50 for a vaccine.

It works 50% of the time, while vaccines are in the 90% range working.

Yay, isnt science amazing ? 50% cut in the mortality rate is something to celebrate.

This is the magic pill that will save all of those idiot anti vaxxers.

The irony here is that this magic pill was developed in 2018 to treat....wait for it.....

You seemed to have misread the link.

Molnupiravir was developed at Emory University by the university's drug innovation company, Drug Innovation Ventures at Emory (DRIVE).[6] In 2014, DRIVE began a screening project funded by the Defense Threat Reduction Agency to find an antiviral drug targeting Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV), which led to the discovery of EIDD-1931.[12] When turned into the prodrug EIDD-2801 (molnupiravir), the compound also showed activity against other RNA viruses including influenza, Ebola, chikungunya, and various coronaviruses.[12]

They found this drug while looking for drugs to treat VEEV, but this drug was never used for that. If you follow the link to footnote 12 you get a pretty good background on this drug.

Ridgeback Bio says right on their site that "Molnupiravir has also shown activity in animal models of Ebola, Equine Encephalitis (VEEV and EEEV), Influenza (seasonal, pandemic and avian), and Respiratory Syncytial Virus" Molnupiravir - Ridgeback Biotherapeutics

Isnt the important thing that it is saving lives ? The pfizer product is reportedly even better.

Well, that wasn't the standard people applied when discussing ivermectin.

I have maintained from the beginning that we would end up with some off-label use discovery of better COVID treatment. That requires existing drugs to be tried out to see if they work. These off-label treatments of symptoms happen all the time.

An animal model is a non-human species used in medical research because it can mimic aspects of a disease found in humans. Animal models are used to obtain information about a disease and its prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. By using animals, researchers can carry out experiments that would be impractical or ethically prohibited with humans.

It has still never actually been given to treat either VEEV or EEEV
