Sir John Monash: Australian Army general and victor of the
Battle of Hamel in the First World War (born 1865, Victoria; died 1931, Victoria)
General Sir John Monash, commander of the Australian corps in France from 1917. An Australian born Jew of Prussian parentage, Monash was credited with instigating the offensive which broke the Hindeburg Line thus winning the war. In peacetime, Monash came to be regarded as the greatest living Australian. In 1927 he was made foundation President of the Zionist Federation of Australia, having presided over the opening of the NSW Jewish War Memorial, or Maccabean Hall, in Darlinghurst, Sydney, on 11 November 1923.
OOOOPPPPPSSSSS Rylah...you forget, you are addressing me Steve,a great admirer of John Monash(Monasch) who's parents came to Australia in circa 1850.
Together with his contempary, Isaac Isaacs, are two outstanding Australians of Jewish lineage that have contributed to this country.
Rylah there was much distrust of Jews and Anti-Jewish feeling in Australia at the time and through great endeavour only shows how remarkable these two men were.
But Rylah, all of what you said is correct but with Qualification...Both Isaacs and Monasch, were Anti-Zionist for various reasons....
After WW1(Where John's outstanding Military Career had Ended) He came back to Australia,in 1924 he met Israel Cohen,a Zionist Leader from England looking to bolster Zionism in Australia...offering him Governor of Palestine and other positions...which Monasch refused...
He was nowhere near converting to Zionism at that time...but you know the Zionists better than I Ry.,once they get their claws into you the Brain Washing starts
Yes Monash busied himself within the Jewish community, mainly in Sydney but mainly Melbourne, did as you say become the foundation President of the Australian Zionist Federation BUT THIS WAS ONLY A HONOURY POSITION...and the only Blot on a wonderful life..steve
