We used to see this all the time when we'd go night fishing in the Gulf.
You'd look behind you and see a trail of green glowing water. It sometimes came in all the way to the beach and the waves would glow green.

Photoplankton ... the surf and footprints are green ... this is all the time in tropical oceans ...
