Merkel was a giant of German politics.

In Germany there are more people above age 60 than there are people aged under 20.
Native Germans stopped producing enough babies 3-4 decades ago.

When you drive on highway in Germany you'll see one factory after another one, with exception of Netherlands this concentration of manucturing factories is unique in whole Europe.

Germany needs babies, and lots of those babies not groomed towards higher-education careers but towards filling those factories.

So, importing "Syrian refugees" was right strategy.

But this was not any reason to do so. The problem was that in Syria armies from all over the world murdered in masses Syrians so they had to flee to save their life. And we Germans know very well what this means.

Germany did already "farm" non-black Christian countries, Germany is full of East-Europeans after successive EU enlargements.

The other thing besides babies that Germany needs is cheap energy.
Germany is all-in on renewable energy.
Renewable energy is expensive, and cheap Russian gas was part of this whole renewable energy transition.

What you say is not wrong but you underestimate what the EU is for Germany in the very first place: a peace project. And green energy means to fight the man made climate change. And to trust in Russia and business with Russia also followed another basic idea: mutual dependencies will force the partners to work together and not against each other. In this case we overestimated the power of rationality and logic - how Russia and the USA show currently very clear.

The only significant error of Merkel was exiting nuclear energy.
