Median CEO pay crosses $10 million

Do those agreeing to work a low level job get forced to do it at gunpoint? By threat of legal action? Or do they agree to work for a wage?

Is there a more rare skillset to be a CEO in charge of a regional, national, or global corporation?? Yep bet your sweet ass there is

And do you not understand the difference between 'holding wages down' and a no-poaching pact??

So colluding to hold wages down is ok with you? You must think capitalism is only for the rich.

There are lots if qualified people that could be CEOs and would do it for less.

The collusion or 'anti-trust' issue was not 'holding wages down'... but an agreement not to try and continually rape each other's high level talent by just throwing money around... there is indeed a difference... and i did not defend the action

please try and keep up

And there are not 'plenty of qualified people who could be CEOs'... nice try

How do you think people get ahead in capitalism? If the ability to move jobs is limited and goes against the market, wages are held down.

Prove there are not. I have worked with many including CEOs and there are many qualified people out there.

No Dave, the collusion most definitely goes AGAINST a free market and capitalism...and the end result is to keep wages down, that HURTS the wage earner's ability to better themselves.

Please, please rethink your position on this....

What the heck is a "Right to Work" State if the employees are not given the right to work and compete for a better, higher paying job?

What makes capitalism WORK, IS competitiveness

You are attempting to gloss over the primary point that I made regarding what motivates CEO's. Care to address that?

There are more ways than stock options to defer pay it's not that big of a deal.

But then again I'm a proponent of the flat tax that would that all income from any source exactly the same. That would address your issue

Do you agree that CEOs, under the current system, are motivated more by stock price than they are by the strength of the company?

They are motivated by whatever the board decides it is they need to do to keep their jobs.

It's not like there's any relationship between stock price and Company strength either, amiright?

The problem the Left has with Free Enterprise and competition is they don't believe they have anything of value to offer, I mean besides whining.

And if you are lucky the ceo of the company you work for isn't colluding to hold wages down.

Why don't you complain about THESE salary inequities???

SO ?

MY whole point is that the same angst against those EVIL CEOs as evidenced the majority of responses here is missing on the above!

These people aren't deciding to pay workers so little they are collecting welfare while collecting millions. Athletes aren't shipping jobs overseas. They aren't colluding to pay employees less.

How many of those CEOs move on to the next ceo job? How many move on to well paying jobs on other companies boards?

How about this?
Have a corporate policy where the CEO makes no more than 7 times the pay of the lowest paid worker.
It's been tried... and it failed.

Ben & Jerry's ice cream were just two hippies who took the ice cream course at Penn State. They went home to Vermont and converted a gas station into an ice cream shop.

The rest is history.

They got to a point where they were getting so big they had to hire people. But since money wasn't their original objective, they instituted a "Seven times rule". They would make no more than seven times the pay of the floor sweeper.

He still was paid just above minimum wage.

The money was put into the company and Ben & Jerry took home small salaries.

The company got too big for them, so they needed to hire a CEO.
At a salary that was seven times the minimum worker's?
They got no takers at all. So they had to abandon that policy.
They hired a CEO and had to pay him $1,000,000 a year. He lasted 12 months, and accepted an offer someplace else with a much higher salary.

Sigh...

So Ben & Jerry sold the company to Unilever for a pantload of money.

There are lots of qualified people that will work for 7x the average workers pay.

AGAIN YOU idiot!
How in the hell do you KNOW that:
A) there a LOTS of qualified people???????????????
THAT
B) and that these lots of qualified work for 7 times????

That is so stupid!

Such an example of how stupid people like you are when it comes to decision making!
When it comes down to responsibilities who is the CEO responsible to?
SHAREHOLDERS and in many cases GUESS who are the biggest shareholders? Employees pension and 401ks!
Do you understand that?
So the CEO is indirectly responsible for decisions that WILL affect the workers AND shareholders.
Plus then the CEO is directly responsible for the business that PAYS the workers!
CEO hires the people that MANAGE the marketing, the provision of goods or services.
All directly affecting the workers continued existence and the shareholders.

VERSUS these people... WHY aren't you pissed at this people that do NO production provide no services?

Tell me do more people work for small companies without CEOs that get paid millions than work for them?

The answer is yes.

So once again we see the focus on the minority so as to make it seem it is more important than it really is.

If you want pay to go up the free up small businesses from stifling regulation and taxes.

There are more ways than stock options to defer pay it's not that big of a deal.

But then again I'm a proponent of the flat tax that would that all income from any source exactly the same. That would address your issue

Do you agree that CEOs, under the current system, are motivated more by stock price than they are by the strength of the company?

It's not like there's any relationship between stock price and Company strength either, amiright?

There should be.

Which stifling regulations are those? Exactly.

No sense griping about it. The way it is. Those at the top are going to make it big time. Those that make the product that make the money for the top are going to take it on the chin. It has always been that way, always will. But one can find a skill or get a degree to use against one's employer or one can start their own business and have grunts below to produce for the owner. Its our system. Not perfect but the best out there.

No. It is not the best....and it is only in the last 40 years that it has become that way.

Change will come. One way or another. The status quo cannot stand.

perhaps it will change so that there is not anger against the average kindergarten teacher making 40 grand. They and the snowplow drivers make waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much money in the eyes of a growing demented group.

That is a symptom....not a cause. I'm pretty sure that once the GOP abandons their strategy of courting the dwindling base who vote on social issues, they will be forced to bring forth a more honest approach to the economy. People who vote in their own best interests will force the change.

That honest approach will require them to admit that trickle down failed and that something must be done to address income inequality. They will have to come out in favor of rebuilding our infrastructure and protecting our greatest resource.....the American worker.
