I'm afraid I didn't make myself clear enough. My ancestors of slave times were known as poor white trash. They were considered trash not because of lack of morals, but because of their poverty. When the hunting and fishing and gathering was bad they went hungry; if it got bad enough, they starved. As far as I know, starvation among slaves was not a very common thing if it existed at all, which I doubt. The black slaves were considered valuable the poor whites were considered worthless.
