The convoy system worked against German subs in WWII, which is why the Germans came up with the "Wolf Pack" strategy to overwhelm the convoy defenses. Similarly, with the use of drones, the defenses of a convoy can be overwhelmed. All it takes is one or two hits to muck up the system.
