But do they really care about the loss of life or is it something else about gun rights they don't like that is at the root of their rantings? After all, alcohol kills about 3 million every year and not a peep on legislation to control that.

Personally I think any "banning guns" or limits on magazine capacity are more distraction than any positive. We can have background checks for weapons and ammo, and we can expand lists. We can harden schools and staff them with "real" police with real communications. WE can force the gop to raise taxes and actually provide mental health care, rather than just some asshole governor who sued a guy for a tree that fell on a sidewalk while he was jogging by. Most American agree with all of that.

But the OP is bullshit. Parents fear mass shootings, esp in schools, for the reason that it's simply not just street crime.

Why then is the majority of gun violence in the major cities? The answer seems pretty damn obvious. You have a hell of lot more people living in Chicago than you do the Black Hills of South Dakota or northern Alabama. Not only are a lot more people living in large cities but they are living much closer together than in rural areas. If you live in a small town or rural area where you you only come in contact with few dozen people a day, your chance of getting shot is a lot less that if you live in major metropolitan area where you come contact with hundreds if not thousands of people daily.

Of course parents have unreasonable fears of school shootings although kids are safer in schools than most anywhere else. The reason of course is that parents are completely helpless when it comes to school shootings yet a parent's greatest responsibility is to protect their children.
