I used this technique to make a water transfer pump, so I know it works. With two (or even one) of these you could easily make a diy respirator.

If you're using one it should be on the exhaust allowing air from inside the mask to flow out only and the line that draws air thru the filter from outside is unencumbered.

If using two the second would go on the hose from the filter to the mask allowing flow from the filter to the masks interior but not from the mask to the filter...

The exhaust valve must be pointed up. It can exhaust anywhere...but the valve works with an assist from gravity.
 
Ya know a simple flap valve using a piece of vinyl covering a slightly smaller hole is about the simplest check valve one can make. And they're used in about every scuba regulator second stage out there for the exhaust valve.
However it's not about to make any shit rig you come up with effective against tiny little viral cells like the extra small covid 19.
