That actually never happened. The border was free to cross until the wall was erected. So it was possible to go to East Berlin to buy food. The care packages were only for people who had relatives in the US, btw.
What for heavens sake do you speak about, stranger and Nazi? The West Berliners did not give up their city when it was sealed off by the Soviets and the Western powers supplied West Berlin from the air.
For example East Germans were free to go to church.

In Russia, the churches turned into warehouses or even barns.
