I have sooooooooo been waiting for baseball!!!!

Now, watching the spring training games, I was really impressed by a lefty non-roster player: Lucas Luetge
So far.....unhittable....eight kills.

"Zack Britton is injured, and he’s going to miss a significant amount of time. The Yankees need a reliever to step up and fill in his shoes, and they might have their guy.
Luetge’s curveball looks fictional, with unreal movement. It has been unhittable so far. It’s not at all an exaggeration to say it’s been absolutely devastating. He complements this pitch with a fastball that in Spring Training so far has averaged 2,770 RPM. This is way up from his around 2,500 RPM average, meaning the Gas Station certainly has him cooking. His curveball also jumped to 2,866 RPM.

....higher spin rate can generate more swings and misses and become harder to hit. If Luetge can keep that fastball working and break off more nasty curveballs, we’re in for a treat.

...his stuff and analytical data so far are jumping off the screen. He’s a delight to watch pitch, and I highly recommend you all to keep an eye on him when he pitches."

"Lucas Luetge continues to impress for Yankees, this time against big leaguers
PRINT SHARE
Lucas Luetge's spring training has been as impressive as any for the Yankees, and he faced a true test against Blue Jays big leaguers on Sunday. Newsday's Yankees beat writer Erik Boland reports on the 33-year-old's unlikely rise."

Saw him pitch one more inning....one more strike-out, no runs.

I'd love to see him on the norther-express next month.

"2. Lucas Luetge
Ohh, you’ve heard of Lucas Luetge by now. If you haven’t, then you’ve been watching zero spring training action.

Luetge is the lefty the Yankees signed early in the offseason and he (unsurprisingly) flew under the radar because he hasn’t pitched in the bigs since 2015. He also missed all of 2018 and 2020, but the Bombers are always looking for lefties, so they took a chance on the 33-year-old.

And that minor-league deal is paying off better than any other! So far this spring, Luetge has yet to give up a run in his five innings of relief. Across those frames, he’s allowed two hits and one walk while striking out 11. Absolutely untouchable.

But, like we said, the bullpen is probably settled, and the Yankees will likely go with a four-man bench that features Brett Gardner, Tyler Wade, Kyle Higashioka and Jay Bruce. Luetge’s efforts will not go unnoticed, though.

He’ll be stashed at Triple-A and will no doubt see major league action throughout the year, especially while Britton is on the shelf for the first three months of the season. The Yankees might want to have more than one lefty readily available at times through June, so he’ll be getting more chances to prove himself. You never know! Someone in the ‘pen can falter early on, lose their job, and then Luetge gets a shot.

Manager Aaron Boone said Luetge has turned a lot of heads and he’ll hopefully continue to do so at various points this year."

from politics to sports to music, i am known for discovering young talents, and i can tell you, this guy is SPECIAL!

"How might the Yankees solve the logjam on the 40-man roster?

The Yankees’ 40-man roster is currently full. That creates a problem if they plan to add any of their non-roster invitees.

As for Luetge, prior to yesterday’s game — he surrendered two long balls to the Blue Jays, the issue of facing righties in greater sample sizes rearing its ugly head — it appeared the lefty was a near-lock to make the roster. Even with that one-game blemish, Luetge’s numbers on the spring are still impressive, registering a 2.35 ERA and 15 strikeouts in seven outings across 7.2 innings.

Even more impressive than the results are the mechanical improvements that got him there. His slider is hovering around 2,850 rpm, four-seamer in the 2,700s and curveball 2,800s, all of which are vast improvements on his career numbers and would have placed him 90th percentile or better in MLB in 2020. As we know, spin rate stabilizes much more rapidly than counting or rate stats, allowing us to put a little more weight into his rpms than say his ERA or strikeout rate.

...Bruce and Luetge are the two most likely NRIs to make the roster, the Yankees need to open up two spots on the 40-man. The simplest solution for one of those spots would be a straight-for-straight swap of Luetge for Britton, with the Yankees placing Britton on the 60-day injured list while he recovers."

"Cashman and Aaron Boone said there would be discussions in the coming days about the final spot in the pen, with left-hander Lucas Luetge figuring to be a possibility after his strong spring."

"Predicting Yankees' Opening Day roster
March 28th, 2021
Relievers (8): Aroldis Chapman, Chad Green, Darren O'Day, Luis Cessa, Jonathan Loaisiga, Michael King, Nick Nelson, Lucas Luetge
Though Justin Wilson is set to resume tossing from a mound on Monday, it may be too close for him to be ready on Opening Day. Nelson boasts a four-pitch mix that the Yankees see helping them either as a starter or reliever, and he’s likely to win a spot in the bullpen. Luetge hasn’t pitched in the Majors since 2015 and isn’t on the 40-man roster, but the Yanks will find it difficult to argue with his excellent spring stats -- plus, he would add another lefty to the ‘pen. King could add some length to the ‘pen until Wilson is ready. "

"Yankees’ surprise roster addition | What you need to know about Lucas Luetge
“Happy to report that Lucas is on our team,” manager Aaron Boone told reporters after Wednesday’s workout at Yankee Stadium.

Spring stats: In nine games, Luetge had a 1.74 ERA and 18 strikeouts over 10 1/3 innings. He walked two.

Luetge had the third-highest average fastball spin rate (2,691 rpm) in the majors this spring among pitchers with at least 50 pitches thrown. Only Daniel Bard (2,778 rpm) and Corbin Burnes (2,738 rpm) were better. Luetge’s fastball lives in the high-80s and low-90s. His slider also had an average spin rate of 2,833 rpm."

Opening day......finally here.

"Lucas Luetge has turned into a weapon in the Yankees’ bullpen

The 34-year-old left-hander turned things around after a rocky start to the season, and is showing his worth as a key reliever.

By Andres Chavez May 12, 2021, 2:00pm EDT

If someone told you that the Yankees would receive important contributions from a 34-year-old reliever pitching in the big leagues for the first time in six years, would you have believed that person? I wouldn’t have, but that’s the beauty about baseball: it’s full of surprises, Cinderella stories, and underdogs.

Lucas Luetge, fueled by the Gas Station and its resources and facilities during spring training, managed to significantly increase the spin rate on all his pitches: four-seam fastball, slider, and curveball. Against all odds, he won a roster spot to open the season, and hasn’t relinquished it so far.

Before Tuesday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays, Luetge has a 3.26 ERA in 19.2 frames, with 19 strikeouts and only three walks. His xERA (2.65) FIP (3.62) xFIP (3.50) and SIERA (3.07) back up his success so far."

There are so few things to celebrate per this Yankee year.....but, this is a good one:

Lucas Luetge celebrates arbitration

He was a rookie in 2012, but after years off and recovering from injury, Luetge finally hit his arbitration period — and he was excited. Luetge signed a one-year, $905,000 contract with the Yankees on Tuesday. The lefty pitched a career-high 72.1 innings in 2021 with a 2.74 ERA. He was an Aaron Boone go-to in the bullpen.
