Just because YOU aren't aware of historical marksman doesn't mean we aren't.
I'd bet he was firing from a rest, and he was an exceptional shooter. There are always exceptional people. Quigley was firing offhand.

No one really knows as the eyewitness accounts vary. My personal belief is he did, but I do know shooters today, who can make that sort of shot over 80% of the time offhand.
