The Democratic party began easing the solid-south Democrats out of the party with Truman. FDR didn't treat the southern Democrats with the usual kindness but also didn't want to lose their votes.
After Truman began letting/encouraging the South leave, the former southern Democrats formed their own party and nominated their own candidate for president. Failing to get elected the former southern Democrats then joined the Republican party where they live happily with their own kind today.
It must have hurt the Democrats to lose all those solid-south votes but they did it.
