Let's do away with all high school and college sports programs.

'Cause they can play sporty ball? How about giving that opportunity to a kid who both needs AND deserves it?
I get the impression some posters here were bullied in high school (or like to imagine that they were) and have chips on their shoulders to this day

Based on the devastating effects of wokeness and trans-athleticism on our society, female sports have been trashed to degree that makes them irrelevant. Wouldn't it make sense just to do away with sports progams altogether? Look at the money that could be saved. It is obvious, considering the currnet presidential administration, that nothing is going to be done to remedy this issue. You can't have just male sports so all sports should go. At least until the country comes to its senses. Which is probably never.
THat would feed and increase the underlying problem.

Mens sana in corpore sano "a healthy mind in a healthy body

Universities don't make a profit on sports. They generally spend everything they bring in. The non P4 programs subsidize their sports, from 20 to 50 million year, by charging non scholly students. It's in their tuition payments, sometimes even a line item.
If anything, ticket and merchandise sales subsidize the rest of the school at major universities with college teams

Oh, no!!!

The only reason some "students" step foot on campus is to play sports, with many of them dreaming of becoming professional athletes earning millions of dollars and getting the chicks (or guys).

If it were not for sports, there would be even more street crime.

That's part of the athletic program's income. A subsidy to offset losses primarily comes from Student "fees" that are added to tuition or direct financial support from the university in some manner to the athletic department. The 3rd row called "total" allocated is the subsidy.

The existence of athletic scholarships doesn’t prevent anyone from earning an academic scholarship

And those kids who earned an athletic scholarship worked their asses off 100% as much as the ones who earned an academic one

In some cases, it might be that a kid focuses on athletics in order to get an athletic scholarship to the point where his/her academic studies suffer. For one reason or another, how many are disappointed when that scholarship does not happen and they do not have much to fall back on? Yes, the existence of an athletic scholarship doesn't prevent earning the other, but it might disincentivize some kids to work as hard for the latter as much as they might for the former. Some will but many won't, and I think an athletic scholarship ought to be off the table.

I never noticed anyone on an athletic scholarship resenting those on academic scholarships. And of course many people earn both.

99.9% of all school competitions go on without a hitch but lets burn it all down because something something something. Righties. Melting everywhere.

So very true. A solution in search of a problem.

The bigger problem is that we spend way too much money on inter-murals--sending a team (as was the case when I was down in Texas a few years ago) from Laredo all the way to Corpus Christi (about 400 miles round trip) to play a football game. There are like 60 high schools that they could have played that were closer, saved the money on gas, maintenance, overtime for the bus driver, etc... But for some reason...no they had to go all the way to Corpus to play Ray High School.

When the teachers ask for more money or the parents ask for vocational education classes....I’m sure the response is, “we don’t have resources”. Yeah...because of dumbass moves like the one above.

Universities don't make a profit on sports.
Correct.

How many years has Ohio State been a powerhouse. Massive TV contracts, massive endorsement deals, massive radio contracts, conference money, etc...

It has to be hundreds of millions of dollars (if not into the billion dollar range)

Has tuition gone down at Ohio State? Nope. Disgraced former coaches are probably still cashing checks.

Texas A&M fired their coach and he’s making more money than the governor for not coaching the team. LOL.

I posted the income/expenses of D1 athletic teams above. OSU took in 251 Million and expenses were 225 Million. Purdue, IU, Iowa etc get the same cut from the TV deal as OSU.

Any resentment is irrelevant. Many people do earn both, but my guess is that most don't. My concern is not for those who earned one or both, it's for those who earned neither one cuz they put their eggs into only one basket. I believe that an athletic scholarships disincentivizes kids to pin their futures outside of athletics.

Yes 2023.
And I imagine the figures were in the same ballpark for at least 10 years running.

Doesn’t seem like -- outside of bragging’ rights -- the citizens of Ohio are getting much bang for their buck with tuition and fees rising while the athletic departments are bringing in so much money that they quickly spend elsewhere.

With OSU there is that supply demand thing. Big Ten schools are more selective than than Akron, BGSU, NIU, Ball State. etc. OSU doesn't have to bake in student fees to subsidize athletics were as the bold do. Student fees pay for 60-80% of the the Athletics at those schools. The tuition isn't all that different either.
At main Campus most of the Ohio state schools (OSU, Cincy, BGSU, Ohio, Kent etc) are around 13K tuition. Miami is the most expensive at 15.5K. Branch campus locations cost less.

Oh yeah, we wouldn't want to encourage kids to set goals for themselves and work hard to achieve them. And, of course, you imply yet again that someone working hard at athletics can't also work hard at academics. Most do. This whole thread is just sour grapes.
