If the story is intended for a young audience, and the sex of the character’s spouse is not essential to the story, it shouldn’t be mentioned at all. I’d it is necessay, it should be a heterosexual couple.

Only once the intended audience of the book is late teens to twenties should any style of immoral pairing be introduced; and even then only as an antagonist for the moralistic protagonist.

Once the audience becomes fully adult , then moral ambiguity can be introduced as a means to see if the readers react appropriately.
