I thought it was a good movie, but a bit slow.

It was not the right kind of movie for 1942. A Hepburn and Tracey movie had just been release that was a big success. The studio were promoting them as the romantic comedy team that everyone loved. Keeper of the Flame was certainly not what audiences expected.

The production itself were filled with problems. Tracey and Hepburn were having an affair and he was hitting the bottle hard. Hepburn tried to protect him result in fights and delays in production.

Every movie made then was expected to carry some sort of parotitic message and this movie did not. The US Office of War Information reviewed movies before release and asked that movies be changed to add such a message. The producer of this movie refused and Tracey got into public shouting contest with the producer leading to him quitting the movie. The movie was not altered and the War Information Office issued a warning to the public about the movie. Republican members of Congress called it an antiwar propaganda film that equated fascism with wealth. Mayer acted as if he was not aware of the production walking out on the premier and director George Cukor called it the worst movie he every made.

Critics were negative on movie at the time but in latter years critics re-accessed and tended to think of it as one of the better movies of the year.

It's a good film. It tells a story and tells it well. Sometimes you can't ask for more.
