Then I started working on an assembly line after retiring from the Army.

This was the mid to late 90s.

Some of us crossed over and 'mingled' with somebody from the other race, but for the most part, the mingling didn't happen as much as you think. Blacks tended to stay in groups during lunch breaks, because they didn't want to watch what they said around whites. The reaching out was more whites trying to blend in with blacks. And listening to my nephew (who is black) he liked making fun of whites that he said were just trying to kiss their asses.

Then there was the crackers who never associated with blacks, and said on numerous occasions that they'd rather shoot their own kids than see them dating a black person. And I've come across blacks who feel the same way. I cannot count how many times some punk asked my wife why a pretty thing like her would be hanging around a white boy.
