As the title states my partner and I have just released a podcast. I am a young liberal and he is an older conservative. In the podcast we tackle issues in a bipartisan manner. Because of our political affiliations, there is some tension. However, we are very good friends and remain civil throughout our discussions and manage to respect each others opinion if we are unable to find common ground. The first topic we've discussed is Universal Basic Income. If you would like to listen here are the links:

iTunes - https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/...330194800?mt=2

SoundCloud - https://soundcloud.com/wingingitforw...l-basic-income

I would love some criticism and feedback if possible as well.

Welcome to the forum.

I hope you take time to actively participate on USMB by reading and responding to threads that interest you and not just pop in every once in a while to post a link to a podcast you have made. The more you interact with our members, the more responsive they'll be to your threads.

I’m a natural skeptic, I’d have to see universal basic income working well in other countries for a long time before I could endorse it in the United States. Also, if people could spend their government check on anything, they could spend it on recreational drugs or an abortion. So people are going to be forced to pay taxes into the system which could be redistributed out to fund activities that violate their religious beliefs. I think in circumstances such as this, it would be immoral.

You need to be an active member here before I will check it out.

TY for sharing that you've produced content and inviting us to listen to it.

That is something that many more people need to find ways to do.

The first topic we've discussed is Universal Basic Income.

Are you both actually or something akin to experts (i.e., either practicing economists or possessed of a master's degree in economics) on economics? I don't ask to be catty, as it were, but rather in the spirit of Rothbard's famous remark:
It is no crime to be ignorant of economics, which is, after all, a specialized discipline and one that most people consider to be a ‘dismal science.’ But it is totally irresponsible to have a loud and vociferous opinion on economic subjects while remaining in this state of ignorance.
Perhaps, however, your discussion is entirely normative, in which case one need not necessarily be well founded in the principles of positive economics?

Either way, I want to know what is the nature of the content/discussion -- scholarly, layman, pathos-based, some combination of those things or others, etc. -- before I commit to listening to it.

Thank you for replying! I appreciate the response.

We are most definitely not experts. I at a few points within the podcast make the claim that I, "don't know what the result of Universal Basic Income would be, but I'm optimistic..." or something of the sorts.

Our discussion has aspects of logos, pathos, and ethos. We have done some very basic research and come to a personal conclusion on the topic at hand.

The whole purpose of the podcast is to invoke thought and, in a way, get people talking about these ideas all while setting an example of calmness and respect in such discussions. There were some times in this episode that things got heated, but we were able to diffuse the situation with humor and come to a mutual respect of each other while managing to clash in our opinions. I think my co-host was a bit ignorant of some facts, however, he probably thinks I was naive to believe the way I did. All of this is okay though, as at least we both came away from the discussion thinking about the topic in a new way.

I hope this gave you a better overview of the podcast and what to expect!
