Hey, true story, we locked up Uyghurs at Gitmo. Why? Because they are Muslim terrorists.

The biggest problem we have with China is we don't understand China, we don't understand her history, and we don't understand her culture.
We complain about Taiwan, Hong Kong, Tibet or the Uyghurs in terms of "human rights" and "democracy" (Ignoring that almost all of these places have spotty histories in that regard). The Chinese see them in terms of National Sovereignty. These places are all part of historical China, which have involved various kinds of foreign interference with China's sovereignty over them. Yet the Chinese have shown immense restraint.
Sure, they took over Tibet and the Dalai Lama hoofed it, but they've allowed it to have considerably autonomy, and the people are better off without the brutal theocratic regime it had. They were perfectly in their rights to snatch Hong Kong from a dying British Empire, but they waited for the UK's lease to run out and have still allowed them self government. They could invade Taiwan, but they'll probably just wait for the Demographics to kill Taiwan for them.
Declining fertility rates, increasing life expectancy and changing cultural values will see Taiwan’s population become one of the oldest in the world by 2060.
