Epstein story fixation originated from the now mostly extinct rightwing pizza gate and pedo cabal conspiracy stuff, it was really the only story that truly had serious elements of powerful people having sex with minors.

Trump indulged it and now it has blown up for him, because he himself is knee deep in it and trying to make it go away - a cover up that is highly conspicuous in itself and of course politically very useful for Democrats.
