Point was, Flynn Lied. He's not some punk who knocked over a liquor store, he's a former three star general with extensive background in the intel community. He should have known damned well that if they were asking about his conversation with the Russian Ambassador (someone whose phone calls are monitored), then he should have known they knew about the contents of that conversation.

And he decided to lie to them.

The FBI had no valid reason to interview Flynn in the first place because they had no evidence he broke the law.
