His NSA pick was viewed favorably, and while Tillerson seems to be lost, the media focused on Kelly Mathis and the new guy meshing into a coherent defense message. Pence was in Europe reassuring Nato countries, and there is progress on their increasing their defense budgets. Everyone wants to see his new Immigration EO, but the changes to Immigration enforcement weren't universally panned, as people want to see what they are, and pleasantly they aren't about trying to use the Army to arrest 12 million people. There was buzz on his regulatory cutting, which generally pleases old time conservatives.

But he's now set up the weekend news cycle for covering his media tiff rather than what actual policy is out there. I'd guess it was Bannon being left alone with him again.
