His very first commentary is this: When the nations of the world accuse the Jews of being robbers (of the Land of Israel), the Jews should respond by saying that the world belongs to G-d. If not the military, they should serve the country in some other way. It should be something everyone does for their particular country. JMHO

There are a lot of ways of serving that don't involve military. We have religious groups who don't believe in violence but chose to serve (when we had the draft) in other ways. There is always the need. In a country like Israel, where conflict is always around the corner - it's shameful to live off the service (or lives) of others like that. But they are a very potent voting block despite being a minority.

Judaism is not a religious group 'that doesn't believe in violence.' The 6th Commandment many mistranslate as reading, "You shall not kill." actually reads "You shall not murder." Commandments go on regulating how wars are to be conducted clearly indicating killiing in war isn't forbidden nor what the the 6th is saying. So I'm not sure what justification the haredi in Israel are using to resist military service. I think they're doing so not on being against violence grounds, but how strict Judaism requires daily observances which might be impractical in a combat zone as with specific prayer times and the like. Knowing what's involved being Jewish myself, I can attest that adherring strictly to everything written would make being a soldier very difficult in peacetime nevermind during a war. But they thought of that way back writing such laws and allow setting aside just about every commandment if obeying it puts the Jew or others' lives in jeopardy.
