How Slavery Persists in Arab Countries?

Slavery still persists in the 21st century in the form of the kafala system. The Kafala system is a legal framework used to govern relationships between employers and employees in Arab countries, especially in the Gulf. The kafala system in its modern iteration came about in the early 20th century pearl industry as a means of regulating the treatment of foreign pearl divers. In the Gulf Arab states, expatriate workers from other Arab countries, Africa, and South Asia make up a majority of the population. However, they are barred from obtaining citizenship and are treated little better than slaves.
