You might want to keep in mind that there was a(several, actually) very serious divides since long before President Trump ever came on the scene. The divides have just become steadily wider and more identifiable and now seem to be nearing a tipping point. The first American civil war was fought against the British with no identifiable military force on the (soon to be) American side to start with. This is almost universally true worldwide. Depending on whether you wish to consider it a separate war, The American Revolution part#2, or 2nd civil war the same is true of the War of 1812. It was also true of the civil war of which you speak. Throughout this time period wars were largely fought by armed militia units and/or individuals although they were often blessed by the various governments and then considered "regular" troops.
The reason I point this out is that there is a hugh real or potential armed militia that is only somewhat identifiable in America. And the overwhelming majority of the militia would come in on the same side and it is by no means determined where the police LEOs and military would stand.
From my viewpoint Obama was the most divisive alleged President ever.
